Research has shown that bats have cells in the brain that sensitifi of sleep breathing animals. Albino jackdaw that has twitchers all-aflutter
August 28, 2010 by famdy

Birdwatchers are flocking to a rural beauty spot to catch a glimpse of this rare albino jackdaw.
Andrew Collins was stunned to see the pure white bird, which has a pink beak, happily nesting among its jet black counterparts.
Mr Collins, 53, was the first to picture the bird when he was out walking in Wiltshire town of Avebury last month.
Since then, he says the bird has become something of a local celebrity as twitchers rush to the area to see the unusual bird, which has been named Jackie by locals.
Andrew said: ‘I first saw it on July 11. It was individually seen and verified by a birdwatcher on that first day. It is still there and apparently lives in Avebury.
‘Incidences of albino jackdaws are very rare indeed. It is a true albino. It has a translucent bill and pink eyes.
‘Wehave named the bird Jackie, which can be either male or female, whileJackies is the name given to people from nearby Upavon because of thevillage’s association with the jackdaws that live in and around thechurchyard.’
Albinism is a recessive characteristic which only shows up when a bird inherits the albino gene from both parents.
Thereare different degrees of albinism, ranging from all white to only a fewwhite feathers on an otherwise normal coloured bird.
Theunusual albino characteristics often make smaller birds a target fromrivals, although experts believe the size of the jackdaw could mean itlives a ‘normal life’.
Andrew added: ‘Things are alright at the moment. The other birds seem to accept him without any problem.
Birds of a feather: The albino jackdaw is captured on camera beside a hooded crow
‘But food is plentiful at the moment. What happens when things get more difficult is another matter.
‘Birds often attack weaker birds under those circumstances, and albinism is a sign of weakness.’
RSPB spokesman Grahame Madge described the bird as ‘fascinating’. He said: ‘It is reasonably common to see black birds, like crows and blackbirds, with some white in their plumage, but true albinos, like this jackdaw, are rare.
‘They can also be quite difficult to identify because birdwatchers are robbed of the normal visual clues, such as the bird’s distinctive black plumage, relieved by the grey neck and black “hangman’s” mask.’

ZooGue Smart Case Review
August 19, 2010 by famdy

The promo video on the $50 ZooGue Smart Case’s web site plays like an infomercial, and that’s appropriate. This case is so versatile and flexible that I’m still wondering if I missed the fold-out attachment that will slice through a tin can like a knife going through butter.
Here are the basics: This is a leather folio case with a leather frame you slide your iPad into from the top, allowing you to access all the ports and buttons. where the Smart Case gets interesting is in how it’s designed to act as an iPad stand.
The front of the case is lined with two Velcro strips, and there’s a flap on the case’s back that opens to act as a kickstand. The inside of the kickstand has two Velcro pads, allowing you to fasten the kickstand to the folded-back case cover. The result is a stable iPad stand you can adjust to pretty much any angle.
But wait, as Ron Popeil would say: there’s more! The Smart Case also features two velcro-lined elastic straps that let you attach the case to the back of a headrest in a car, turning it into an in-car TV player—useful on a long trip with a kid in the back seat.
I can’t fault the Smart Case for functionality. however, one of the models we tested showed some pretty serious scuffing of the leather on the iPad frame after mild use, making us a bit concerned about the durability of the leather. and the case really isn’t much of a looker: with the front cover closed, you’re staring at two big velcro straps and a large plastic nameplate embossed with the ZooGue Smart Case logo. But if aesthetics aren’t your concern, there’s no denying that the Smart Case is cleverly functional.
